PHEW! New Castle County DE and nearby Chester and Delaware County PA dodged the proverbial bullet when hurricane Sandy plundered the coast lines of nearby New Jersey and New York our thoughts and prayers go out to our friends in the those nearby areas still recovering from the effects of the storm. Hurricane Sandy and follow-up noreaster Athena did litter the yards with the first wave of falling leaves and plenty of broken branches remind the SO to dust off the rakes and make sure the leaf blowers and leaf vacuums are in working order!

It is time to clean and stack the tomato cages and clean up all the frosted plant  debris in the flower and rock gardens and toss it all into the burn or compost pile! Gather up the lawn ornaments the cement ducks and the Mexican tera-cotta figurines you picked up on one of the summer trips south and dont forget to take the whirly-gig-thing-a-ma-bob SO likes to watch   spinning in the breeze out of the tree where it landed after Sandy and put it all in the shed for next year.

If you have been putting it off you need to get the bulbs: crocus, daffodil, tulips, hyacinths, anemones and the min-y-art-a you bought from Bulb-A-Land a few weeks ago and are still sitting in the delivery box in the laundry room into the ground now before the ground turns to cement and you need a jack hammer and blasting caps to break the earth open.

Hold your horses and leave the clippers in the wagon. Please do not start whaling away on the butterfly bushes and the flopping over grasses still bending in the wind sure they look a bit ungainly, but they are great places for the birds to hide during the day and night from the    marauding red fox and the neighborhood bad cats.

It is a good idea is to have a local chimney sweep check the integrity of your chimneys and if they need cleaning get them sweptcreosote build up can cause unwanted chimney fires. And remind the Significant Other to clean the gutters one more time and to be careful on the ladder!  We are all looking forward to another mild winter though we havent checked Uncle Ben Franklins Almanac nor seen an overly skinny wooly caterpillar to verify that crystal ball prediction. Happy gardening!

The Yorklyn Yoggers attended the annual Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk Buddy Walk in Rehoboth Beach Delaware in October and the little king had a great timeyeshe had Thrashers French Fries within 3 minutes of the store fronts opening bell and when done said: Lets go home! We stayed for the remainder of the walk festivities - had lunch and then made a bee line home to be on time for soccer    practice.

The  Para Transit bus situation is for the most part resolvedthough with a  different driver every day driving right by our house or following the GPS   directions and stopping at neighbor Mr. Caziers house every other morning the 45 minute window of opportunity is a real challenge as Ryan and MLWA wait in the garage singing and dancing to cell phone music and videos. Oh yes we miss the days when Miss Stacies yellow Red Clay Consolidated school bus number 111 arrived every single day right on the dot between 6:33 and 6:38 am.

The Newark Lightning Special Olympics Delaware bowling team is practicing every Sunday afternoon at the Blue Hen lanes in Newark in preparation for the Winter Bowling Festival to be held in New Castle DE at the BowleramaSaturday December 5, 2012 from noon to 3:00 pmCome on out and cheer on the athletes and their unified partners! The Yorklyn Yoggers are planning on going to the 6th annual Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk Buddy Walk in October. Ryan already has his weekend plannedBuddy Up Party Friday nightWalk Saturday morning Thrasher French fries at 11:00 and then lunch and then convince his mom and dad it is time to go home. For more information about the walk visit www.boardwalkbuddywalk.com it really is a wonderful Delaware experience as the whole of Rehoboth Beach business community gets involved.

Ryan has graduated from John Dickinson High School and has started attending the Meadow Wood Transition Programa three year program where he will learn a few more life skills to prepare him for life beyond school.  MLWA is calling it college though Ryan says it feels just like school except there are no typical peers anywhere around. We had an interesting time setting up the bus for Ryan to travel to and from school since he is no longer eligible to ride the big yellow school buses. Ryan and his dad visited the offices of Delaware DART for an interview to see if he would be eligible for Para Transit rather then taking the regular DART bus. We are fairly sure he could have taken the regular bus at least one time. He would have needed to walk 3 miles from home to the bus stop on the Lancaster Pike and take a bus into the City of Wilmington transfer to a Newark bus travelling along the Kirkwood Highway and get off within a few blocks of Meadow Wood School then walk to the elevated crosswalk over the highway and walk to school from there then reverse in the afternoon. We figure he would have had to start about 4:30 am and be home by 5:30 pm.

Ryan had an excellent summer attending 3 different camps:  Camp PALS in King of Prussia PA for a week away from his parents and then Special Olympics Delaware  at Camp Barnes for 2 nights, just outside of Bethany Beach Delaware during the hottest days of the year plus a Teen and Young Adult Self Advocates Conference at the National Down Syndrome Congress Convention in Washington DCWhen MLWA asks which one was his favorite he always responds: Camp Barnes though he has said he would like to go back to PALS next year and to Washington DC again to walk around the zoo too.

Here comes the Fall lets get a head start on cleaning and repairing our bird feeders especially the ones that were attacked by the Pileated Woodpecker who was in the neighborhood looking for bugs and pecking new windows, doors and skylights into wooden boxes. And for the  winter birds who will be returning this year be sure to stock up on some large bags of black oil seed and a bag of corn for the squirrels. And speaking of seed and corn storage be sure to use a good sturdy metal container the plastic containers invite the mice to chew through the walls and perish in the seed when they cannot find their way back out.

It is the perfect time to plant the Spring bulbs like: daffodil, tulip, narcissus, crocus and snow drops. If you have a large area you want to bulb-up for Spring 2013 there are some really good deals in the bulb catalogs this year so be sure to peruse the bulk color mixes for the real cost savings.

And be sure to write a note to remind your SO to erect an 8 foot fence with razor wire around the bird feeder, suet feeder and squirrel corn table stations. The dear deer and old fat jazzy raccoon are on their own this winter. And as a post script remind the SO to be thinking of a good solution to keep also very rotund mister ground hog who devastated the pumpkins, gourds and beans while we were at the NDSC Convention in Washington DC in July out of the pumpkin patch next summer.

Clean up the desiccated fruit that even the dear deer turned their noses up at and are laying on the ground beneath the apple, pear and peach trees leaving it invites the bad bugs so get it out of there. And be sure to pile the garden debris on the future  Boxing Day burn pile to start the rites of spring 2013.  Be sure to call master gardener Ed and reserve a time to use the leaf vacuum blower and make sure the rakes are still handy in the shed and not leaning against a tree out by Ms. Sandys.

The Yorklyn Yoggers thank all their well wishers and contributors to the  Down Syndrome Association of Delawares Annual Buddy Walk on Sunday May 20, 2012. We walked and it was a beautiful sunny day Thank you friends and family for helping us meet and exceed our goals for the walk:  Elaine and John Woerner. Marlane Baird, Ruth Clancy, Allan Cleary and Sandra Home, Gail Renulfi, Guido and Catherine Garosi, Pam Rybinski, Jane Goldman and UBS (Gregg Goldman), Pat Pugh, Angela, Whit, Savannah and Mike Daly, Grayce and Sid Hess, Phil Gamgort, John Howker and Barbara Schaeffer, Jennifer Idell, Anna Jennings, Joanne and Bill Nimmo.

It was a busy June and will be a busy July too!  Ryan attended the Senior Prom and rode in a limo with 7 beautiful ladies and then gradated with his 2012 class a from John Dickenson high School at the University of Delaware Carpenter Center  - Ryan joined with  other self advocates and concerned parents who met with Senator Tom Carper and talked to him about the importance of passing the ABLE Act and then it was off to Camp PALS at Cabrini College in King of Prussia PA for a whole week.  Camp PALS is a camp for 18 to 25 year old young adults with Down syndrome who are paired one-to-one with a volunteer counselor. Ryan spent a glorious week away from his parents making new friends and learning a lot about independence. His mother and father barely survived the experience too.

Next up will be a three day camp at Camp Barnes near Bethany Beach with his friends from Special Olympics Delaware and then it will be on to Washington DC to attend the National Down Syndrome Congresss annual meetings where Ryan will participate in the Young Adults Self Advocate conference while his mother and father are attending classes and seminars.  Have a Tremendous remainder of summer 2012
